O MATO calls for the 4th edition of the O MATO Experience!

Settled on the shores of an Amazonian river delta lies Cheiro do Mato, scent of the jungle. An island naturally shaped by soft waters, tropical forest and white beaches. Here, like-minded people from all over the world can be part of a lifetime journey in coexistence with the local culture and surrounding nature.

For 10 days participants disconnect from the everyday hussle to discover an unique event. Linked with music, adventure, social and cultural encounters, a collective experience is being created. The program consists of intimate parties, expeditions and workshops led by native guides as much as interactions with the environment.

/ Accommodation

As we know from local customs, the most comfortable way to sleep in the jungle is in a hammock. Therefore we provide jungle camps, that include personal hammocks and rain covers as well as eco-toilets. On the main area you'll find sanitary facilities, such as toilets, showers as well as several drinking water tabs.

/ Transportation

Cheiro do Mato can be only accessed by boat from Manaus or the closest village of Novo Airao. For 10 day passes a scenic 10 h opening boat party to our venue, will mark the start of the experience. For 5 Day ticket holders the journey will either end or start from the village of Novo Airao instead, which is a 3h bus ride from Manaus. (For further info check our FAQs).
Manaus is the heart of the Amazon, providing different options to get to. We recommend taking a boat from Belem/Santarem (BRA), Iquitos (PER) or Leticia (COL), being the cheapest and most eco-friendly form of transportation. In case your time is short there are direct flights from major Brazilian cities. If you chose to do so, we kindly ask you to compensate your flight emissions via Atmosfair (https://www.atmosfair.de/en/offset/flight). Compensators will be given two free tours, which they can partake in throughout the festival.

/ Food

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price of all tickets. Our local chefs combine elements of Brazilian and Venezuelan cuisine with fresh products from the local markets. You can choose between vegetarian, vegan and fresh fish options when you buy your ticket. For a casual appetizer, exotic juices, sandwiches and snacks are sold at our juicebar for a fair price. Please be aware that meat is not on the menu.

/ The Venue

Cheiro do Mato - Unique Jungle-Lodge means the scent of the jungle. A small Jungle Lodge on a peninsula upon the shores of Rio Apuau, 200km north of Manaus. Even though the venue is quite remote, you’ll be surprised by the comfortable conditions given. A groundwater well provides fresh drinking water, whereas our solar tower ensures green energy 24h a day. Surrounded by tropical jungle and located on the border to Anavilhanas National Park, this natural paradise provides you direct river and forest access, a white beach, a lagoon and paths into the jungle.

/ The Story

With the end of the Kautschuk boom in the 20th century, descendants of Indigenous slaves (also: Caboclos), settled along the shores of Amazon rivers. Same as at our venue Cheiro do Mato - Private Jungle-Lodge

After different groups cultivated the peninsula over generations, they eventually moved to the capital Manaus seeking a better economic future. What they left behind was a hidden gem, where nature took back over.
Today the venue belongs to our main local partner Amazonas Reisen. For ten years now the owner Wolfgang Brög has been working together with a few locals to shape this unique piece of paradise as it is today. Since 2017 the O MATO Experience has been returning to this sacred land every year in September. By building permanent structures we contribute our share to the ongoing evolution of Cheiro do Mato. Evolution because every day, every month and every year the human and natural architecture grows and merges into one beautiful unit.
